Environmental Education

A very important responsibility the Loyalhanna Watershed Association holds is that of educating the community within the watershed. From classrooms to trailside, to formal meetings, LWA staff members are always willing to share information and engage watershed citizens of all ages in water quality education. If you are interested in having the LWA visit your club, classroom, or meeting, please contact the LWA Program Manager at (724) 238-7560.

Water for all Seasons

LWA is pleased to offer a new program series for 2007. "Water for all Seasons" is a unique opportunity to learn about the importance of adequate rainfall, good water quality, and conservative land use in our area, while enjoying the beauty of each season throughout the Loyalhanna Creek Watershed and beyond. This winter, spring, summer, and fall, a new program will be offered on an appropriate topic of the season. All programs are offered free to the public, and are geared for the entire family to enjoy. Upcoming programs will be featured on the "Upcoming Events" page.

  Macroinvertebrate Monitoring Program
The macroinvertebrate monitoring program has grown by leaps and bounds since it began in the spring of 2004. LWA is pleased to offer stream-side and classroom programs geared for middle-high school students in nearby school districts. Students have the opportunity to perform kick-netting collection techniques, and learn basic identification of many aquatic "critters." Water quality tests on stream pH and dissolved oxygen are also performed.

  Youth Conservation Corps (YCC)
Each summer, six students are hired to tackle conservation projects throughout Forbes State Forest and Linn Run State Park. Funded by the Katherine Mabis McKenna Foundation, the program has been providing conservation work opportunities for area youth for more than 20 years. It is a unique summer employment opportunity for high school students interested in environmental careers. Applications are accepted each February from students ages 16-18.  Participating students must reside in or attend schools within the Ligonier Valley, Greater Latrobe, or Derry Area School Districts.
