Land Protection and Conservation

McConnaughey Farm

A key area of focus for the Loyalhanna Watershed Association is the conservation of land…wetlands, farmlands, greenways, forests, and open space.  Currently, LWA owns over 400 acres of land throughout the watershed for the purpose of protection and conservation. As an organization, LWA will continue to seek out strategically located parcels of land for conservation purposes.  The most effective way to accomplish this goal is to place a conservation easement on the property owned, which insures little or no development will occur on that piece of land. By working with other conservation organizations, the LWA hopes to expand its land conservation program in future years. These organizations include the Western PA Conservancy, Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the Smart Growth Partnership of Westmoreland County.

One of LWA's most well-known protected parcels is the historic McConnaughey Farm. Once a farm grazed by cattle and sheep, it serves as a breathtaking gateway into the town of Ligonier. The Ligonier Country Market takes place at the foot of its hillside each Saturday morning throughout the summer months.

Ligonier Valley Land Conservation
LWA is currently working with the Western PA Conservancy and other like-minded organizations to identify strategic Ligonier Valley properties for conservation. As the headwater region for the Loyalhanna Creek Watershed, it is critical that this area remain forested with smart, environmentally sound development.

Land Stewardship
Various properties are owned and maintained by LWA, including the tract of land that makes up the Ligonier Country Market, McConnaughey Farm, Loyalhanna Nature Trail, and LWA Office Complex.
